This is Bess on her first birthday. I had skipped out half my medical school classes that day and had gone out shopping for a little doll, trying to get the just right simple doll shape baby; I was kind of clueless. But here she is after receiving it. She became, I guess, a little mama with her baby girl, and she is sort of kissing her - not very well, but here is the clumsy but unmistakable application of maternal affection.
In a few short weeks Bess will deliver a little girl into this world. There will be kisses, and other manifestations of affection which are miraculous, and ought to be seen as miraculous. Love is not an accident.
So Happy Mother's Day to this new mother and her little girl. In about a year there will be another birthday party. I hope to be there, paying attention.

what a darling picture! If Bess shows that much affection to her little dolly on her first birthday, just wait until she holds her real baby girl and feels all the tender affections a mother has for her baby--she is going to be a wonderful mother. What a caring and terrific dad too, who truly has his priorities in order. Nice tie too.
ReplyDeleteThe tie is lame, like all ties. What a hideous convention. But the rest of your comment is very kind, and you are right about Bess. She is already a wonderful mom.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you skipped out on classes to buy me that doll. And in a few short weeks you'll be able to hold another little girl.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post Dad.
